Yuku free message boards

At first, it was a nightmare but now it's not so bad. The main thing is that it is much more customisable but to get most advantage of it, you need at least a working knowledge of html and css.

The WYSIWYG editor is a bit confusing and I still haven't mastered it. At first, I just deleted the whole CSS file and used the WYSIWYG, which made it look a lot like EzBoard. But then I found that a lot of the features that make Yuku "Yuku" were gone. Simple layouts are quite easy to do but, for the more advanced features (sidebars, etc.) it is probably easier to install one of the "designer skins" and modify that to your own needs - unless you already have a CSS file that you can use or have a few days to work on it.

You can install a number of "skins" and work on them "behind the scenes", previewing them, until you are happy with one, then set it as the default for your community.

It's also easy to forget that there are still a lot of people on dial-up, so adding too many features can lead to longer loading times and, as a result, fewer visitors and posts. I think the old adage "KISS" (Keep It Simple, Stupid) applies.

I've checked out Yuku boards with text-only browsers - used by people with visual disabilities - and, provided that the admin has not gone crazy and added loads of features (most of which, no-one uses), they seem to display fine.

If you are considering moving over, I would recommend setting up a new yuku community now and tinker around with that until you get it the way you want it. That way, when you migrate this board, you can simply copy and paste the Custom Header/Footer and the CSS files to this board (once it has migrated).
