"buy a sailboat and take off" Ann

Ann,
I understand the appeal of such a thing.
But please forgive me; do you and your husband have much nautical experience?
Riding on a boat in gorgeous weather is fun, and fairly easy.

Living on a boat, without an on-shore support team is logistically quite challenging.
Just getting groceries can be a crushing challenge.
And don't make the mistake of thinking dock space is like automobile parking spaces.
Many dock owners will allow you to dock there if you're buying something from them (or renting the space). But if you're docking a 30' yacht there (and it's not likely you could live tolerably on anything smaller) they're not going to want you there longer than it'll take you to pay them. Then, off you go. If you plan a trip to Wal~Mart, hubby would have to drop you off, and then get the boat out into the bay someplace.
And with larger boats, it can require a minimum of two just to drop or raise anchor.

And how would you get to Wal~Mart from the dock? Even if it's only 3 miles away (it's probably more than 7) it's a 6 mile round trip; 3 miles of which you're either lugging groceries, or stealing a shopping cart, looking like a homeless lady.
A taxi could help, but that increases your costs.
Some yacht owners may use a bicycle, or a small motorcycle for this.
But there's no good solution that's reasonably affordable.
The bright side is, there's not much room to store bulky food on a 30' sailing yacht anyway.
Even the U.S. Navy lays cases of canned food on the floor, which the sailors walk upon, until the food is slowly consumed.
Then you've got the problem of storms to deal with, & the seasons, etc.
It's not an easy life. It's doable for those in their 20's or 30's. But if you & hubby aren't, you may wish to seriously reconsider this superficially appealing but difficult if not unworkable fantasy.

There may be alternatives.
There seems to be a significant subculture in the U.S., of retirees that live in their AirStream house trailers.
They skip around from one camp spot to the next, network friends, & etc. etc.
Some of them seem to like it very much.

BUT:

I believe if you do the cost calculation, and include all the joys of this sort of exercise which can include paying for a place to empty the trailer's sewage holding tanks etc. (you'll want to take a shower after you do this, and it has to be done fairly often), you may find it's cheaper and far less risky* to simply buy a comfortable Lexus, and travel from place to place and stay in luxury hotels. It's less fuss, more glamorous, and easier.

* With the trailer, there's risks such as having a collision while on the road with it, having it fall down an embankment, or having it broken into and vandalized, or burglarized, etc.
Much of that goes away with the Lexus idea. And there's no telling how much higher the price of fuel will go.
