Good advice, Tron. Internet sites are often not quite what they pretend to be. How can I tell that that site has not been set up by Apple itself with the
intention of catching those who click on the forbidden links?

You must then have high-speed Internet access. Are you also getting that for free?

I had a wireless router set up in my home office. One day a new lamp arrives via my wife. Great, I can see better. Life goes on. About eight months later I
have no service so I go to re boot my router only to find it unplugged for the lamp. My neighbor had an unsecured Linksys as well and I never knew the
difference.
Was I stealing his wi fi? I don't think so as he was broadcasting the signal. If he did not want to share it, he should have secured it. Highspeed is a ripoff, and I hope someone uses mine to get more bang for the buck. Now the stealing of software, movies, and music is a no brainer. |

ER,
That's a great story!! Would you like to cut & paste it to @Recipes? If there isn't a good thread for awesome stories, you're welcome to open one. |

First of all the copy-right laws! I don't have a problem but if it says copyright protected I ask permission and have yet to be turned down. They usually
answer within minutes. I used to post with permission from site.
I remember a poster that still posts here and it was copy righted and I ask the link for permission and got it for her and just edited it in. That has been a couple of years ago also. (I don't believe I have even had to mention it to the poster) But again I try and not (OK I don't know how to download movies and the such, so my permission is merely articles) I (if and when needed I am going to get a router for another PC to use on my high speed) It also seems sear and I both over the last couple of years have had nothing but problems with our PC,s no matter what they are? Just before this, I was totally without for about 2 weeks and now I don't have a CD that works. It appears the ribbon has came lose that's attached to it. I am now unable to install my printer. (I blame this on the PC Doc too) sear, this is not your fault for the slump because you do terrific topics. I really blame myself for this. We have had it before and worked it right out. I caused most of it!! I was getting pretty angry with some 'I called terrible rudeness' I also saw no reason to explain my edits especially when they were calling sear and I 'do nothings' and cussing us and goading posters into leaving and purposely making a long time poster upset and leave. I know some of you have short tempers, and can tear the wall-paper off the walls, but also always followed the rules until pushed into a rage. I saw this and who caused it. I don't know how one profanity word can be written so many different ways? I edited one word 3 different times (posts) and did not even say a thing to the irate poster? My fault 'I should have' rather than let everyone think I was edit happy! Those of you that remain always have known sear and I hardly 'edit' anything, but to allow rudeness to carry on I edited some posters. I disliked sear and I being called names and have zero respect for a poster 'happy to get one 'Banned' when they goaded the poster in the first place. I also let a thread go where one long time poster was 'ganged' up on and that shames me terribly! So to shorten this sear is not to blame for anything except for doing a fabulous job, with topics and issues. The fault lies more with me trying to correct my presumption of rudeness, and my personal opinion of some that just think rules don't (or should not apply to them) I do feel I have a lot of friends here @ TRT and other boards, and since I have been away for several days, extremely ill and 'yes' depressed because it appeared some thought I was over-bearing. I so appreciate the so many PM,s so many of 'you' have sent me the last couple of days. (I believe I became too hard on myself) sear and I have been a team for over six years now and I do intend to try harder, But make my corrections more public than I had before. At least I can try!

Grace,
Thanks for the clarification. But most of that's in the past. Our current crew is a collection of gems; not a bad apple in the barrel. We're good to go. -------------------- UPDATE --------------------- With Macaroo's generous help (she knows how to find just the right information; I can barely find my butt in the shower) I've got my new computer going fairly well. I got it all set just after the weekly TV news cycle ended. So it'll be another week before I'm back up to the lame level I was at 6 months ago. But thank you all for keeping me cyber-company through the worst of it. And with Grace06 back with us, it feels like a whole new joy again. Thank you Grace. @TRT simply isn't the same without you. & thanks DM. I'll try not to let any pixel patters get the better of me. |

Yes, indeed. Our crew consists of conscientious individuals: those who apply whatever gifts they have been given towards the betterment of humanity. Those who
are not conscientious don't stick around for long.

Sear, as for a slump all boards have experienced that in the past few months. Twitter and especially Facebook are to blame. I don't like either because
there's no conversational interactive 'flow.'
You posted: Because your description of satisfied Apple customer matches so many other Apple computer users, If you have a problem call Apple's tech support number. You have a one year free tech support on a new purchase. I have 2 or 3 years after that since I paid $250 for an extended 'Apple care' warranty. I have owned 2 laptops, larger sizes. I've had no serious problems with either. BTW, you can also go to Apple.com and there are help forums. |

Thanks for the tech. insight MA7.
I was on tech. support a few days ago. My Mac mini comes with a one year hardware warranty, but only 90 days of tech support, perhaps ~20 or so of are gone. They said my extended warranty (which they tried to sell me when last on the phone) is $149.oo That extends the phone support either to one year, from 90 days, or to 3 years (I'm not sure). It extends the hardware guarantee to 3 years (from one year). If I can't get this thing working properly in 3 months, then it's no damned good. Here's two links. The first is to an Apple forums thread about a defect in the Mac OS that results in improper image display on many monitors (including mine). http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2004318&tstart=0&messageID=9787658#9787658 Here's a link to Mac's help forum, which has been very useful. http://freethinkerspub.yuku.com/forums/73 I haven't worked out all the bugs. But at least I've got a stable platform I can use in the meantime. There's stuff I just don't like about the Apple. With Windows, there's a tiny little icon I can click that makes the desktop pop to the surface (all the apps stay open and active, but off the screen). With Apple, all the open apps have to be attended to individually; either shove their windows nearly off the screen, or close them, or whatever. Apple makes saving a new document to a specific drive in a specific folder difficult to impossible. With Windows it's a breeze! Just tell it where to save the file to! Done! But maybe I'm just an old dog that doesn't learn new tricks very well. |

Try F11 on your Mac to push all windows, and F11 again to bring them all back. Apple makes saving a new document to a specific drive in a specific folder difficult to impossible. Uh? I find the Apple far superior & faster. Press the openapple-s combination, name it, and put it anywhere you want on the system. If you can't see the folders in the locations click on the little triangle to the right of the file name and it will open up for navigation. |

Sear, Consumer Reports once pronounced the Apple Care extended warranty is one of only a couple worth purchasing. I only needed it on one of the 5 Mac products
DH and I have owned but it paid for itself.

"With Apple, all the open apps have to be attended to individually; either shove their windows nearly off the screen, or close them, or whatever." sear Elk, I splurged on an Apple ~101 keyboard (it has the numerical keypad on it too). When the Firefox browser is us, I hit F11, and it turns the volume down. I tried it also while first pressing and holding the: - control - option, & - command keys. Some weird stuff happened; but none of it that. Then I tried holding down the "fn" key and hitting F11. THAT DID THE TRICK Elk! Thanks. What baffles me is why Apple keeps these important, basic computer functions such closely guarded secrets. Honestly, the U.S. federal government doesn't keep its secrets this well! "Press the openapple-s combination, name it, and put it anywhere you want on the system. If you can't see the folders in the locations click on the little triangle to the right of the file name and it will open up for navigation." Elk ? This one's beyond me Elk. Is there a simple, step by step command sequence to this? Does it work in both TextEdit, and in Pages (the iWork wordprocessor)? |

In Finder click on Help and then open Mac Help. There are lots of shortcut lists and detailed directions, mostly for people who have been exposed to Windows
for too many years
The Apple-S has worked in every application I have ever used, but I haven't used Pages. Or you can go to File - Save and do the same thing. When the save window opens click on the triangle in the upper right next to your filename and see how it toggles back and forth between minimal options and full options for drives, folders, & files. |

"The Apple-S has worked in every application I have ever used ..." Elk I imagine it's useful, or you wouldn't have mentioned it. But I have no idea what it is. Is a command I have to type, in some text entry window somewhere? Is it an option selected from a list of options in a drop-down menu from someplace? Is it a keystroke, or combination of keystrokes? The fn - F11 command you've called to my attention is spectacular! It accomplishes just about nearly what I'd like (except that once the desktop is accessed, Apple floods back ALL THE OTHER APPS; instead of allowing me to deal with just that one app, or select that, and others). But it's vastly better than having to manually shuffle all those other windows out of the way. Elk, I don't mean to put you to work doing what Apple should have done. But if there's a simple & easy clarification here, you've got a willing student. Meanwhile, I've added the " - In Finder click on Help and then open Mac Help." to my list of Mac notes. I'll dig into it as soon as I can. |

OK, I assume that you have Apple keys on each side of your spacebar. Hold down the apple key and the s key at the same time to get the save window to open.
If you want to hide everything except the application you are working on open the first menu item, such as Firefox, and you will see the Hide Others option, along with the keystroke combination that will let you do it without going to the menu. Don't make me come up there. Unless you are prepared to show me a good fishing spot! |
