I've been watching the convention all night - Republicans whining about partisan divisiveness? From the party led by "the decider" and advised by a man who thinks we're a nation of whiners for worrying about our house payments?
Republicans whining about Beltway politics and promising to deliver a shake-up to the city that they've dominated for the past 8 years? I'm puzzled by the idea that I'm supposed to take this seriously.
I'm more than unconvinced so far - I'm offended. Tonight's theme seems to be "Let's pretend we haven't been in power in D.C. for almost a decade." The speakers tonight have promised a Republican executive of character and decisiveness who will generate change in America, working to secure our borders, conduct a mature foreign policy... you know, all of these things the Republican executive we have now has failed spectacularly at doing in the past eight years.
John McCain is a good man - I really think that. But to claim that he's still a political maverick is to insult our intelligence. He tried being a maverick and bucking the system, and it earned him respect, but never the presidency. He had to shift to the right markedly for a better shot at that. The conservative movement has only endorsed him as long as he stays in line.
I'm growing increasingly disillusioned with the McCain campaign. This is a man I've long respected, who my family supported in 2000, who I heartily approved of while he remained true to his long-held stated views and criticized politicians, including other Republicans who didn't agree with him. But in the past few years, that man seems to have been replaced by a political yes-man for President Bush.
