Folks,
I remember the closing scenes of the film 'Easy Rider' in which redneck farmers in a pick up truck kill two long haired bikers for no apparent reason. I thought - what kind of place is America?
In yesterday's Guardian, Linda Grant writes on this subject. She looks at the now familiar stereotypes of apple pie and rifles as against brainy but snobbish liberals and sees - incompatibility.
Is the continent hopelessly deadlocked in this incompatibility? Grant thinks that it is.
She writes:
"So America is stuck. Two countries, mutually irreconcilable, who never meet each other and don't want to either. Who distrust each other at best, despise each other at worst, and who have absolutely no understanding of the other."
I don't live in America, so have little to offer, but it would be interesting to hear from US residents. Is it really like this and if so, is there hope of a change?
