The problem with the Euro currency is that interest rates have to be set according to the needs of the whole bloc, not just one individual nation. A problem
relating to this happened when Ireland was in the midst of an economic boom whilst the German and French economies were stagnant. The Irish were limited in
their options to control inflation as a result. The European Central Bank (ECB) sets interest rates according to the needs of the whole Eurozone, not
individual nations.
However, there are many advantages of adopting a single currency across nations. Using the Eurozone as an example, one advantage is the greater price transparency that results from a single currency, as consumers are able to compare prices across the Eurozone and can purchase goods and services elsewhere within the Eurozone economy, where prices happen to be cheaper. This enhances competition and, in theory, reduces prices for the consumer. Another advantage is the fact that companies are able to invest more easily in other countries using the same currency, due to decreased costs to set up. This enhances free trade and may provide jobs. Other obvious benefits to business include the removal of exchange rate mechanisms, therefore ensuring price stability and allowing businesses to plan into the long term. Production efficiency may also increased due to increased specialisation and economies of scale.

Do you really want to tie the value of our currency to Mexico, Colombia, Haiti, and Canada?

If another country in America wants to use the US dollar as its currency, you can't stop them. Panama has been doing exactly that for about 150 years. I
can only remember once that it has been a problem, and that was the time when your beloved +%!%@%% Reagan tried to destroy our economy on purpose. The rest of
the 150 years have been nice and smooth.
Sue me, Errol Grey. But in truth, it's my joke, and I don't even get it. --- Sear |
