The fish came out of the sewer after heavy storms in Pinellas County, in Florida, on Tuesday. Resident Dianna Fernandez said: 'I was like, 'No way there's fish in the street. 'And I kept going further and further and seeing fish everywhere -- in driveways. I've never seen anything like it.' The fish used their pectoral fins to walk or shuffle around the streets. Local Hannah Cline said: '(We thought) that maybe somebody dumped some fish but then we realized that it was coming up from the sewer that we had so much rain last night.' I find it rather sad, that the catfish did not want to stay in the sewer. It would have been water but maybe they had a second sense that it was poison water and wanted out. I wish the article would have said something about someone caring enough to try to find a pond or lake close enough by to let them go. It probably would have been to long for any of them to have lived anyway. But if they had to die anyway could it have not been one natural way in water rather than a street or sidewalk? Many new florida residents are not familar with them, but they've been around since the sixties. Marine biologist think that in addition to them moving due to water conditions(normally ponds drying up)), they also move in relation to population pressures. Either due to finding more chow, or moving from contested terroritory. Sadly like the Flathead catfish, they are tranplanted foreign invaders killing off native species. These ones are normally sort of eel like and smallish. Looks like the chow has them porked up pretty good by the pick........ "40 years of economic chaos brought to you by the two party system"

I have heard and seen what you are talking about before. A much thinner fish 'eel-like' and they can move well on the mud. (I saw that picture and wondered?) It looked like any lake catfish that I have never seen even move other than flop on a boat. In other words a catfish like that picture are not the kind that get the walking fish name, right? Brings up a good question of the jumping carp that are invasive too and headed to lake Michigan and are said to be able to wipe out the lake of alll the native fish. I have not heard much about them in months and wonder if just maybe they found a way to kill them off or at least control them to save the native species. A $4.3-million temporary barrier that has been in place in the Chicago Sanitary and Shipping Canal near Romeoville has blocked the voracious fish, but its six-year-old electrodes are corroding and need to be replaced soon. A larger, more powerful permanent barrier built nearby, at a cost of $9.2 million, previously has been tested for only a few hours at a time after passing barges and tugboats generated foot-long electrical sparks. That poses "a serious risk to navigation through the barrier," according to the U.S. Coast Guard. In a regulatory version of bait and switch, barge operators initially agreed with the government's plan to activate the larger, more powerful barrier during July while the temporary barrier was repaired. Now those repairs have been put off until fall, but the permanent barrier is still scheduled to be turned on within the next week. "We're opposed until they finish the safety testing, unless it's an absolute emergency," said Lynn Muench, senior vice-president of regional advocacy for the American Waterway Operators, a St. Louis-based industry group. "There's no logic to it, other than they want to turn it on." Concerns have been raised that barges carrying coal, gasoline or other hazardous materials could explode, or that someone falling overboard in the electrified water could die from a shock to the heart. A study by Navy diving experts prompted the Coast Guard to warn recreational boaters about the area's dangers and to require special safety measures by barge operators. Originally imported to keep algae out of catfish farms in the South, Asian carp have become a dominant species in the Mississippi River and are headed for Chicago through the Illinois River and the Sanitary and Shipping Canal. The fish, which can grow to four feet long and 100 pounds, threaten the entire Great Lakes ecosystem, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Repairs to the temporary barrier were postponed because of a parts and equipment shortage. Yet the Army Corps of Engineers still plans to turn on the permanent barrier within the next week to make sure it will work when the temporary barrier is turned off for repairs in the fall. "It's not an emergency at this point in time," said Chuck Shea, manager of the Asian carp barrier project for the Corps. About two years ago, the barge industry called for more safety testing but agreed that the permanent barrier could be turned on if the temporary barrier failed. Mr. Shea said the Corps is "meeting soon with industry to decide if more testing is needed."
