My mom Bertha was the youngest of 5 children born of Russian immigrants. They had one son and 4 daughters. One daughter died at age 17 because someone threw an old wooden milk crate with metal spokes at her and one of the spokes was sticking out and punctured her heart.

Like many of my mom's generation, they were poor and only completed 8^th grade as they needed to leave school and get a job to help out the family.

15 years ago today Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer. He was only 32, the same age I am now.

My Uncle David once took us kids to the landfill to shoot at rats, and I was encouraged to fire both barrels at once. That was fifty years ago, and my butt still hurts when it rains!

Missed the rat, by the way.

The uncle in question died yesterday at the age of 90. Sore butt or not, the memory caused my eyes to (little bit) water. He was an authentic Kentucky redneck character, and I'll always remember him strolling up the sidewalk...

She's been dead now many years, but I still think about my Gramma alot. She was a wonderful person. She taught me to "Live and Let Live" ...because no matter what anyone did in their life, whether she believed they were right or wrong...she would let them make their own mistakes. She wouldn't judge anyone. I loved her very much!

My classmate and friend was killed in a subway accident recently. He was 21 years old. Despite having physical disabilities that prevented him from talking normally - he used an interpreter or an electronic notepad to speak - he was active (and very successful!) on the debate team and always had something insightful, and usually wickedly funny, to add our discussions. Last night I had my 20 year old cat Sable put to sleep. I scheduled the date in advance for the full moon. It was the most difficult thing I have ever had to do. She had been with me for half of my life. I did all of my grieving ahead of time. Crying, having panic attacks, wanting to chicken out....but I knew I was doing her a disservice and it was selfish to keep her here.
