When I was a boy my Dad mentioned to me that one of the peripheral benefits of attending college can be what he called "socialization".
By that I think he meant learning to have conversations with peers that didn't end in fist-fights, or screaming, etc.

But there are other experiences besides college that provide this introductory lesson into adulthood.
